Your Emails: "AES May Have The Worst Customer Service"

As a borrower from American Education Services (AES) and finally getting my defaulted student loans after financial hardship into rehabilitation, I felt this story was pertinent to future borrowers. I admit that I screwed up and wasn't paying all my student loans on time, but was able to get my Federal Loans into rehabilitation and up to date, yes! They were great to work with, the ladies were so nice, understanding on the phone and they worked with me to create an affordable repayment plan.

Then I tried dealing with the ladies from AES. I think someone should get them a day at the spa because they are all complete ignorant, miserable women. I've talked to three different women and they all were completely rude ot me over the phone. Last time I noticed I was paying them money every month and essentially am a customer of theirs, right? Well they need some training in manners for "listening" and customer service skills. The first lady had me on the phone 3 times in one day and for an hour at a time, arguing, talking over me, talking to me in a condescending manner; you name it she didn't want to hear it and she didn't listen to anything I was trying to explain to her why I couldn't afford to pay her $3,500 that day. She threatened to call my employer and pull money from paychecks. So I had to give her 10 checks in a row for ACH. My phone call with Federal Student Loans took me 15 minutes ... Something wrong there?

Just today I spoke with a girl named Andrea and she told me that it was in my best interest to pay off my $2,900 balance right now to get it out of default. After I logged in and explained that my online account said my balance was $0.00, she said you don't have online access to your account. Does that make sense? Then I said I'd like to lower my monthly payments before I sign this letter that states you're going to roll $500 of collection fees into my principal. She said, "We can keep taking $300 out of your account, but you paid 8 in a row ontime and with one more you're eligible for rehabilitation" Really? So the fact that I had been on-time didn't warrant a little more human emotion from this lady. Do these people work in a dark room in the middle of Pennsylvania somewhere? Someone send them flowers or something. As she tried to go back into how paying it today would be better for me after I told her I wasn't able to; I decided to pay my last collection payment and call back in a month to hopefully speak to someone with a heart. Even when you do pay on-time, the women of American Education Services (AES) are kind of like praying mantis, they eat their own kind, other human beings trying to get by and correct the wrongs of their past.

I, too, have had numerous issues with AES. Originally my lender was MOHELA. I consolidated some of my loans my junior year to lock in my interest rate. Therefore, they sold those loans to AES. Therefore, as soon as I graduated my forgiveness was waived. Which is fine. I put them into forbearance so that I could consolidate ALL my loans with MOHELA (at the time I was promised it would take 30 days tops...that was over a year ago). AES was very difficult and would not give my information to MOHELA. I sent letters, faxes, everything they asked for, I called daily and got no help or civilized assistance. As many of you may know, MOHELA is no longer allowed to consolidate loans...hmmm...probably because they did business with sadists like AES. Well, I had to start back from scratch and begin consolidation with Directloan...the Department of Education. Everything was great, all of my loans were ready to consolidate EXCEPT the ones sold to AES. AGAIN, AES was difficult. Everytime I called to ask what I could do to expedite the process or just get it up and going....some customer service rep assured me it would be taken care of. That was in MARCH...it is now AUGUST.(I put my AES into forbearance LAST AUGUST.) I even spoke to supervisors at AES and one in particular, Angela Pearl, who promised me everything would be taken care of after I threatened legal action. Well here I am still waiting on verification letters and OBC's so that I can consolidate and get my repayement on track. And apparently AES thinks I am stupid enough to believe their lies. But how convieniant that my forbearance with AES has expired this month. AND YES the customer service reps are incompetant NAZIS. Point is I don't appreciate MOHELA selling my loans to incompetant lenders and I find it insulting and scary that most of the customer service reps are ignorant and uneducated along with the rest of the AES staff. It's a disgrace. STAY AWAY FROM AES.

How do you consolidate an AES loan? We have had the worse experience with their providing several varieties of misinformation.

My daughter is a full time Chancellor's list student in physics. She completed a music degree. We are unable to get any sort of deferment from AES and have received constant harassing phone calls from them as late as i
9 p.m. at night. We never get the same information.

I need any suggestions! Help!

I have been trying to request an Income Repayment Plan from AES for the past couple of months. I called prior to faxing in any documentation to verify the specific documents necessary for consideration. I was told that until the IBR request was processed no payment is due and that late fees will not be assessed to the account once it has been approved. Due to the fact that I have gotten divorced since my last tax return was submitted I made sure that I asked them about my ex-husband's signature verification for the forms. I was told that as long as I included the divorce decree, his signature would not be necessary. A couple weeks later, I received a notice in the mail that my IBR was denied due to a lack of signature. When I called back and inquired about it, explaining what I had been told during the previous conversation, I was told that they would re-submit the form. A couple weeks later, I received another denial. This time when I called, I was told that the IBR was not considered not because I had not signed every page of the tax forms. I signed them and faxed them back for resubmission after speaking with a supervisor to make sure that nothing else was missing for consideration. A couple of weeks later, I received a document that stated that my payments would be deceased but I owed the delinquent balance and late fees. A couple of weeks after that I received another denial letter stating that they were now missing the signatures on the original IBR request form itself. Now my account is delinquent 51 days and over $1000 overdue. I have two young children and am surviving off of unemployment. I depleted the unemployment deferment.
I spoke to a supervisor today named Elizabeth who was completely belligerent. When I asked her to review the notes on my account so that she could see that not one person stated that my IBR was not signed she denied my request. She said I'm not reading through your notes. When I asked her then how could she speak to me about an issue on my account if she doesn't read the background and she kept saying look I'm telling you what the issue is...then she proceeded to say "Would you like to sit on the phone while I read through the notes for thirty min." so I said "be my guest" and to that she replied No I am not doing that.
It is absolutely unbelievable to me that no one wants to assist you with resolving issues at this organization. They TRULY believe that they are above the law and beyond any point of accountability! I can't believe this is what we get for trying to better to quality of life for ourselves and our children.

Are you aware of the Income Based Repayment Plan? Congress passed this in 2009 and I seem to be the only person on it! The lenders will not tell anyone about this law. Here is how it works: You pay based on your earnings. Each year you send in your tax returns and there is a scale that tells you how much you pay. You renew every year and your payments may go up or down. After 15 years the debt is wiped out. AES will discourage anyone from getting on this program because they lose money! I have my own AES horror stories. I am in the process of a possible class action suit against them. They are try to block people from accessing a Federal Law. Passed it on: The Income Based Repayment Program. Put forth by Obama and passed by congress in March of 2009 and came into law July 2009.

I do not have a loan thru AES. But, have a loan thru a company like AES. I had contacted my other lenders, and informed them I am on SSDI and told them how much I receive each month. I had consolidated my loans, and was put on IBR with no problem. This one lender, ECMC. Has the same business practices as AES. Something should be done about these student loan issues, and department of education should get more involved with issues like these. Since, these student loan lenders are using the department of education to be able to submit documentation to the courts on collection on a federal debt.
Yes, I am having my SSDI check garnished by ECMC that are garnishing it due to a federal debt by depart. ed. OK, then why cann't my loan go according to my INCOME like my other loans. Something should be done about the cost and the student loan lenders. What can be done?

"I was trying to explain to her why I couldn't afford to pay her $3,500 that day."

Lol. Oh. Is that it? Well wait a minute, let me get my pocket book out...

I would have to agree that AES is like a toxic mold that grows in a dark room and is lethal to everything it touches. It's a criminal organization that needs to be shut down ASAP.

AES has the most ignorant customer service. They never answer calls or return calls. My emails go unanswered or even acknowledged. I am trying to work with them, but cannot do this when they don't answer anything. I have a friend who was in a similar situation with them - they ignored him then started garnishing his wages. He is on a teacher's salary and it was hard for him to make ends meet, as it is...I agree with the comment that "AES is like a toxic mold that grows in a dark room and is lethal to everything it touches." How can what they are doing be legal? There has got to be a way out of this quagmire. I don't make a salary, so I don't know what they will garnish. I get paid by the client and by the class I teach and this varies from month to month and year to year (depending on which university has a class and how much they pay for that class...) I have a Ph.D. in psychology, but since it is not from an APA accredited university (it is regionally accredited), health insurance companies will not reimburse me as a Ph.D. graduate but as an M.S. graduate. Wish I had known this - I would not get a Ph.D.!! The bulk of my loans are for my Ph.D., which by the way have more than doubled since my graduation. AES is a glorified loan shark!!
